Our team has been desperately trying to get food, clothing, shelter and basic supplies to some of the hardest-hit areas like Mzinyati near Inanda, and Ntuzuma, where mudslides and flooding has literally washed away houses and killed entire families. These are areas where a couple of our township yoga teachers work on the ground, and have direct access to families who need help most. We also have ways of 'walking in' food, blankets etc. to people who are cut off because of road or bridge collapse. Today, we have a distribution of food, clothing, blankets and basic supplies going to 10 families who were rescued from the flooding and left without anything, in a community hall in Groutville.

Development & Mentoring Programme

The youth unemployment rate in South Africa, of job-seekers under the age of 24 years old, was over 64% at the end of 2021. The Covid crisis continues to negatively impact employment for people throughout Africa, especially the youth, where 45% of university graduates are still jobless one year after graduating. The objective of The Global Collective is to provide advice, upliftment, skills development and mentoring to those disadvantaged in South Africa, to enable them to find employment, start their own businesses, transform their lives, and give them hope for the future.

The Movie

Township Yogi is a Green Shoot Films production. The documentary is filmed in KwaMashu and Inanda, KwaZulu Natal, townships riddled with crime and unemployment, and where many of the population are suffering from HIV and Aids, and where Whoonga is destroying communities and lives. Research has shown that the practice of yoga helps boost immune system activity, reduces stress, improves muscle tone, combats wasting and slows the progression of HIV/Aids. Because of controlled breathing and relaxation in yoga, it benefits TB patients, and it’s mind-body benefits assist young children in developing inner strength and self-knowledge, helping them make positive changes and decisions in their lives.
